Lessons from baby's first steps

Babies are admirable creations of God.

Ever watched a baby go through psychomotor development?

At a tender age, they learn how to sit. This process can be tideous and tiresome and sometimes the baby cries but it is meant to activate the backbone and neck bones so that the head can balance.

After learning how to sit, the baby begins to learn how to crawl. Some children begin to crawl with one leg first then learn to do it with both. Once they've perfected the crawling skills, they desire to move further by learning how to stand.

They fall several times hitting their behinds on the floor and cry due to the excruciating pain but that doesn't deter them from trying again. They hold on to something or someone if they must just so that they can learn to stand. When that is achieved, they do it more often until they've perfected that skill.

Now it's time to walk, a baby's first step is scary even for the parent or guardian. Either party fears the baby falling head first considering that the most important part of the human body, the brain, might be affected. When baby is learning to take the first step, someone has to hold him/her. This goes on for a while until baby decides to do it alone. The joy in the family after the first step alone is inexplicable. This is a very memorable moment for everyone.

After walking, baby wants to run now. This happens when baby begins to play with age-mates or those slightly older. The fact that they can walk faster (run) motivates baby to learn that skill. Day by day, baby begins to learn to walk fast then slowly hastens the pace and finally catches up or even becomes better than those who learnt the skill earlier.

Now, baby is in the league until s/he meets those at the top: those who can jump. S/he feels intimidated but takes it as a challenge to get to the top. S/he changes her crowd and begins to hang around her intimidators so as to learn through mentorship. The mentors hold baby and teach him/her how to jump. Time passes by and baby learns how to jump. Finally baby can now mentor the new learners on psychomotor skills.

Lesson here is: We never hit the ground running. You have to start from scratch if we ever have to get to the top league. We must be willing to learn and be relentless during this process. The process will be tedious but you have to perfect every step before rising higher. When you meet people who are higher than you, don't feel intimidated, take that as a challenge to rise higher and to make your best better. Hang around them, learn from them, ask questions then implement lessons and you'll definitely enter their league. When you get to the top, don't just sit and enjoy the privileges, mentor other starters and you'll have made a difference.
